Schaumburg prohibits keeping dangerous wild animals as pets in residential areas. The village code restricts ownership of venomous snakes, large predatory cats, primates, and other wild or exotic species without permits.
The Village of Schaumburg prohibits the keeping of dangerous or wild animals within village limits. This includes but is not limited to large cats (lions, tigers, leopards), bears, wolves, primates, venomous snakes, alligators, and crocodilians. Illinois state law under the Herptiles-Herps Act (510 ILCS 68) and the Dangerous Animals Act (720 ILCS 585) also restricts ownership of certain species. Common domesticated exotic pets such as small reptiles, fish, and small birds are generally permitted. Ferrets are legal in Illinois and may be kept as pets. Hedgehogs are also legal under state law. Any animal that creates a nuisance through noise, odor, or danger to neighbors may be subject to animal control action regardless of species. Contact Community Development or the police non-emergency line for animal complaints.
Keeping prohibited wild or dangerous animals may result in seizure of the animal, criminal charges under Illinois law, and village fines. Owners may be liable for any injuries caused by prohibited animals.
