Schaumburg, IL Animal Ordinances: Cat Rules (2026)

Section 92.01 defines a CAT OF LICENSING AGE as four months or older and treats a STRAY ANIMAL as any animal running at large on the public way or on property other than its owner's or keeper's. Because Schaumburg straddles Cook and DuPage Counties, § 92.20 splits the rabies-proof requirement by county: cats kept on the Cook County side must display the Cook County rabies tag, while cats on the DuPage County side must have current inoculation proof readily available on request rather than a county tag. Every cat, ferret, or dog four months or older must be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian at Illinois Department of Agriculture-approved intervals, and no license may issue without the inoculation number and expiration date on file; the community development department can demand proof directly from a veterinarian if an applicant's paperwork conflicts.

Section 92.09 adds a heat-specific confinement duty: any female dog or cat in heat must be kept in a building or secure enclosure so it cannot contact another animal, except for a planned breeding. A cat allowed to roam at large while in heat, or without current rabies proof, falls under the chapter's general prohibited-acts and impoundment provisions, since § 92.50 treats any § 92.30 violation, including an unconfined animal on someone else's property, as a public nuisance subject to seizure.
