Schaumburg provides enhanced protection for heritage and landmark trees of significant size, age, or species value. These trees receive the highest level of preservation consideration in development review.
The Village of Schaumburg's tree preservation program gives special consideration to heritage and landmark trees β specimens of exceptional size, age, species rarity, or historical significance. While the Village does not maintain a formal heritage tree registry, trees with a trunk diameter exceeding 24 inches DBH receive enhanced protection during development review. Removal of such trees requires Village Forester approval and mitigation through replacement plantings at a higher ratio than standard significant trees. Native species including bur oaks, white oaks, and American elms of large size are given particular consideration. Development proposals that can demonstrate preservation of heritage-sized trees in their site plans may receive favorable consideration from the Plan Commission. The Village's comprehensive tree canopy program aims to maintain and expand urban tree coverage across Schaumburg's residential and commercial areas. The Public Works Department maintains a tree planting program that adds hundreds of parkway trees annually.
Unauthorized removal of heritage-sized trees: fines up to $1,000 per tree plus enhanced replacement requirements at 3:1 or higher ratios.
