Schaumburg requires permits to remove trees on parkway land and regulates removal of significant trees on private property. The Village's tree preservation program protects the urban forest canopy.
The Village of Schaumburg has strong tree protection policies administered by the Public Works Department. Parkway trees (those in the public right-of-way between the sidewalk and curb) are Village property and cannot be removed without Village authorization. Residents requesting removal of a parkway tree must contact Public Works, which will evaluate the tree's condition. Diseased, dead, or hazardous parkway trees are removed by the Village at no cost to the homeowner. On private property, Schaumburg's tree preservation ordinance protects significant trees β generally those with a trunk diameter of 8 inches or more measured at 4.5 feet above grade (DBH). Removal of significant trees on private property may require a permit and replacement plantings. Development projects must submit tree surveys and preservation plans as part of site plan review. The Village Forester reviews tree removal requests and may require replanting at specified ratios.
Unauthorized removal of parkway trees: fines up to $500 per tree plus replacement costs. Private tree violations: fines and required replacement plantings.
