Amarillo's zoning code sets setback and construction standards for residential carports. Carports must maintain side-yard setbacks of at least 3 feet from property lines and cannot extend beyond the rear property line.
Under Chapter 4-10 (Zoning) and Chapter 4-3 (General Building and Construction Standards) of the Amarillo Code of Ordinances, residential carports must be no closer than 3 feet to a side property line, including the roof overhang. No part of the carport may extend beyond the rear property line. The surface under the carport must be paved with cement or asphalt. Accessory structures under 200 square feet (tool sheds, playhouses) are exempt from permit requirements. Larger carports require a building permit from the Building Safety Department. Variances are required when carport placement aligns with the existing home footprint in ways that violate standard setbacks.
Construction without required permits may result in stop-work orders, fines, and mandatory removal. Fines up to $500 per day for code violations are possible.
