Under the Horry County Zoning Ordinance, garages, carports and gazebos may be located in any yard as long as all district setback requirements are met. A carport does not merge two buildings into one for setback purposes.
The zoning ordinance's accessory-structures provisions allow garages, carports and gazebos in any yard (front, side or rear) provided every applicable setback is satisfied. Connecting two buildings with an open carport, porch or breezeway does not make them a single building. Because a carport is an accessory structure, it must be subordinate to the principal dwelling on the same lot, cannot sit in an easement, and generally may not be placed forward of the principal structure unless the setbacks for that yard are met. A building permit may be required depending on size and construction. Property inside Myrtle Beach, North Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach or Conway follows those cities' zoning codes instead.
A carport that violates setbacks or sits in an easement can be ordered relocated or removed, with possible code-enforcement penalties.
