Clark County Department of Building and Fire Prevention requires a building permit for any carport attached to a single-family dwelling regardless of size, and for any detached carport over 200 square feet or over 12 feet tall. Permits go through plan check with structural detail showing the Las Vegas Valley design wind load (90 mph basic wind speed with local modifications for higher-elevation areas), snow load for Mount Charleston zones, and seismic requirements for Seismic Design Category C. Freestanding metal carports sold as kits must be installed with engineered anchors and typically require stamped drawings; a casual staked-down metal cover can be cited as an unpermitted structure and as an unsafe structure during monsoon wind events. Carports count toward the covered parking requirement in Title 30.60, so a detached carport can often be used to restore required parking after a garage conversion. Setbacks mirror accessory structure rules: typically 5 feet side and rear in R-1. Fabric shade sails and retractable awnings are not treated as permanent carports but must not overhang the property line or public right-of-way.
