Private carports are a permitted accessory use in single-residence districts. As a detached accessory structure a carport must be at least 5 feet from side and rear lot lines, 10 feet from the house, and no more than 25 feet tall, per the county Zoning Ordinance.
The Zoning Ordinance lists "Private tool sheds, garages or carports, tennis courts, patios" among permitted accessory uses in single-residence (SR) districts (Sec. 40-4-13). Placement follows the Area/Bulk Schedule (Sec. 40-3-7): detached accessory buildings and uses must be a minimum of 5 feet from interior side and rear lot lines, at least 10 feet from the principal building, and cannot exceed 25 feet in height. Building a carport is construction that requires a permit under the Building Code (Ch. 7). SR districts also limit a lot to two accessory buildings. Municipal properties follow city zoning.
A carport placed within the setback or built without a permit is a violation; the county may order relocation or removal and impose penalties.
