Round Rock allows residential carports only in side or rear yards β never in front yards or over a driveway in front of the home. Maximum height is 15 feet, and a building permit from the Building Inspection Division is required.
Per Round Rock's Building Inspection Division guidance, residential carports are classified as accessory structures and may be located only in side or rear yards. Carports are not permitted in front yards or over driveways in front of the home. Maximum height for any accessory structure is 15 feet 0 inches measured from existing ground level to the highest point of the roof. Carports must not encroach upon building setbacks or easements, including Public Utility Easements (PUE), drainage easements, and water, sewer, or stormwater easements. Property owners must submit an Accessory Structure building application to the Building Inspection Office and obtain a permit before construction; under Round Rock's one-permit system, any associated electrical, plumbing, or mechanical work must be included in the same permit. HOA approval may also be required separately under deed restrictions.
Constructing a carport without a permit or in a prohibited location (front yard or over a front driveway) can trigger stop-work orders, removal orders, and Class C misdemeanor citations up to $2,000 per day under city code enforcement.
