The City of Scottsdale regulates carports as accessory structures under the Zoning Ordinance. Carports must comply with setback requirements based on the underlying zoning district. In most single-family residential zones (R1-R5), accessory structures require a minimum 2-foot setback from side and rear property lines, with an additional foot of setback for every foot of height above 10 feet.
Scottsdale's Zoning Ordinance Article V and VI govern accessory structures including carports. Carports in residential districts must not exceed the height limits of the zoning district and must maintain minimum setbacks. For R1-35 through R1-7 districts, the standard side yard setback is 5-10 feet depending on lot size, but accessory structures may be placed as close as 2 feet to side and rear property lines if they do not exceed 10 feet in height. For every foot above 10 feet, an additional foot of setback is required. Carport enclosures converting to garages require a building permit. Carports cannot be located in the front yard setback area. All construction requires a building permit from Planning and Development Services.
Building a carport without a permit or outside of setback requirements may result in code enforcement action, required removal, or modification at the owner's expense.
