In a recognized residential subdivision on a lot under one acre, East Baton Rouge Parish limits keeping to three chickens and prohibits roosters, geese, guinea fowl, ducks, turkeys, and peacocks. Larger lots have fewer restrictions. No fowl may create a nuisance.
Title 14, Chapter 2 (Keeping of Domesticated Animals) was amended in 2012 to address backyard poultry. Section 14:224 restricts keeping to three chickens within a recognized residential subdivision on a lot of less than one acre, and prohibits roosters, geese, guinea fowl, ducks, turkeys, and peacocks on such lots. Roosters and other fowl are also prohibited on lots of two acres or less. No fowl or bird may cause a nuisance, and owners are liable for any damage caused. Registered 4-H and Future Farmers of America (FFA) club members may keep otherwise-prohibited fowl if they meet all requirements. Larger agricultural tracts face fewer limits.
On a written, signed complaint, the ACRC director orders the owner to correct the violation within 72 hours; failure may result in a summons to appear in court.
