LAMC 53.00 and zoning regulations allow keeping chickens in most residential zones. Roosters are prohibited in single-family residential zones. A maximum of one rooster is allowed in agricultural zones. Livestock such as horses and goats are generally restricted to lots of 17,500+ sq ft in A1/A2 zones. The number of allowed animals varies by lot size and zone.
Under LAMC Section 12.05, the keeping of poultry, fowl, and small animals is permitted as an accessory residential use in agricultural and single-family residential zones (RA, RE, RS, R1, RU, RZ) provided it is not for commercial purposes. Chicken coops must be at least 20 feet from the owner's residence and 35 feet from neighboring residences, with at least 10 feet from side or rear lot lines. The city code does not specify a maximum number of chickens, but the Department of Animal Services can restrict numbers if the keeping constitutes a nuisance or health hazard. Roosters are permitted. Livestock (equines, bovines, goats) requires lots of 17,500 square feet or more. No permit is required for chickens.
Animal Services can declare excessive animals a nuisance under the code. Section 53.42 prohibits selling live birds on public streets. Nuisance keeping may result in an order to reduce or remove animals.
