Under the City-Parish Unified Development Code, fences and walls may be a maximum of eight feet. Anything over four feet in a front or corner side yard must be at least 70 percent transparent (less than 30 percent solid).
UDC Section 9.5.2(D)(2) caps fences and walls at eight feet parish-wide. A fence or wall greater than four feet, but not over eight feet, may not sit in a front or corner side yard unless it is less than 30 percent solid (70 percent minimum transparency), or matching permitted fences already exist in the subdivision. Chain-link fences up to ten feet are allowed in M (industrial) zoning districts, and open wire fences up to ten feet may surround recreational facilities such as tennis and badminton courts. Fences or walls over eight feet require professional engineering and design for the applicable wind speed.
Fences built without a required permit or exceeding UDC height/transparency limits are code violations enforced by the Permit & Inspection Division; corrections or removal may be ordered.
