Keeping any wild, exotic, or non-domestic animal in unincorporated Nevada County requires special authorization from the Sheriff plus a zoning use permit, and often a California Department of Fish and Wildlife permit. Violation is a misdemeanor.
Nevada County Code Section 8.01.580 prohibits keeping any wild, exotic, or non-domestic animal without first applying for and receiving special authorization from the Sheriff or designee; county zoning also requires a use permit and zoning compliance before permission is granted. The Sheriff may impose caging, tethering, or other conditions, may revoke authorization when safety is endangered, and may not authorize any wild animal needing a state Fish and Wildlife permit until that permit issues. The zoning table (NCC Sec. 12.03.040) allows such animals only with a use permit in rural districts and bars them from R1-R3, commercial, and industrial districts; wildlife rehabilitation facilities instead need an administrative permit meeting county standards.
Violation of Nevada County Code Sec. 8.01.580 is a misdemeanor; unauthorized animals may be impounded, and zoning violations are pursued through county code enforcement.
