Ohio's Dangerous Wild Animal Act (ORC Chapter 935) bans private possession of dangerous wild animals - big cats, bears, primates, large constrictors and more - statewide. No new permits are issued. This state ban applies throughout Montgomery County.
Ohio's Dangerous Wild Animal Act (ORC 935.01-935.99), effective January 1, 2014, prohibits private possession of dangerous wild animals including big cats, bears, elephants, hyenas, gray wolves, alligators, crocodiles and most nonhuman primates. Certain large and venomous 'restricted snakes' require an Ohio Department of Agriculture permit. The registration window closed years ago, so no new private owners can enter the system; accredited zoos, sanctuaries and research facilities are exempt under ORC 935.03. This statewide ban applies in every Montgomery County city and township. Ordinary pets like typical reptiles, ferrets and rabbits are not covered.
Possessing a dangerous wild animal without a valid permit is a criminal offense under ORC 935.99, with seizure of the animal and escalating misdemeanor/felony penalties.
