Auburn allows large livestock (horses, cattle, goats, sheep) only in RC and R-1 zones under ACC 18.31.220. Most residential zones prohibit them. Mini-goats may be allowed on smaller lots.
ACC 18.31.220 distinguishes between small domestic fowl (poultry) and large livestock. Full-size horses, cattle, sheep, and standard-size goats are permitted only in the RC (Residential Conservancy) and R-1 (One Dwelling Per Acre) zones where lot size is adequate for pasture. Typical minimum standards are one acre for the first animal and additional acreage per head thereafter. Standard R-5, R-7, R-10, R-16, and R-20 residential zones prohibit large livestock. Miniature and pygmy goats are sometimes treated as domestic fowl equivalents under the permitted animal framework and allowed on smaller lots with similar 10-foot setback rules to poultry. All livestock must be confined by a lawful fence under RCW 16.60 (Fences) and must not be allowed to roam. Manure management, fly control, and grazing must not create a public nuisance under ACC 8.12 or 6.02.140. The Muckleshoot Tribe reservation and adjacent agricultural areas border parts of Auburn and have separate jurisdiction.
Keeping prohibited livestock in a standard residential zone is a zoning violation under ACC 18.31.220. Loose livestock impoundment fees apply under ACC 6.02.
