Animals released from the Louisiana SPCA shelter under New Orleans contract are microchipped before discharge, with chip information registered to the owner under Ch. 4 animal services protocols.
While New Orleans does not require all pets to carry microchips, Ch. 4 and the LA-SPCA contract require any dog or cat redeemed from impound or adopted from the shelter to be microchipped. The chip is implanted at the shelter, registered with a national database, and fee is included with the impound or adoption charge. Owners must keep contact information current. Lost-pet returns are streamlined through chip scans by NOPD, animal-control officers, and participating veterinarians citywide.
Chip implantation is performed before release. Failure to keep chip data current can delay future return of a lost pet but is not separately fined under Ch. 4.
