ECL 11-0505(2) and (3) make it unlawful to intentionally feed wild white-tailed deer, moose, and black bears. The Department of Environmental Conservation issues written warnings followed by tickets if feeding continues. Indirect feeding via unsecured garbage or birdfeeders attracting bears must be remedied once the resident is notified. The prohibition applies statewide and overrides any contrary local practice.
Continued wildlife feeding after a written warning carries fines up to 250 dollars per offense, with each day a separate violation, plus potential ECL ticket and DEC seizure of attractants.
