Alaska prohibits negligently leaving food, garbage, or attractants that draw bears, moose, wolves, foxes, and other wildlife. The rule applies statewide and supersedes any municipal allowance, protecting both people and animals from dangerous habituation.
Under 5 AAC 92.230, no person may negligently leave or store food, garbage, or other attractants in a manner that attracts moose, deer, elk, sheep, bears, wolves, coyotes, foxes, wolverines, or deleterious exotic wildlife. Intentional feeding of bears is also prohibited, and feeding moose is restricted within most populated areas. The regulation applies on private and public land statewide and is enforced by Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Because it is adopted by the Board of Game under AS 16.05, municipalities may add stricter rules but cannot weaken or override the statewide prohibition.
Class A misdemeanor under AS 16.05.430 with fines, possible jail, and required removal of attractants. Bear-related violations may carry enhanced penalties.
