Green Valley, AZ Building Safety: Elevator Maintenance (2026)

Arizona regulates elevators through the Arizona Department of Real Estate (ADRE) Elevator Safety Program under ARS 41-4001 through 41-4010. All elevators, escalators, and moving walks in Pima County must be registered with ADRE and carry a current Certificate of Operation. The ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators is the adopted standard. ADRE conducts annual inspections of all registered conveyances and five-year full-load safety tests. Building owners must maintain service contracts with licensed elevator companies and keep maintenance logs available for inspection. Elevator technicians must hold an ADRE elevator mechanic license. Residential single-family elevators (typically two-stop home lifts) are exempt from ADRE registration but must meet ASME A17.1 residential provisions. Pima County Development Services requires elevator plan review and permits for new installations as part of building permits. Emergency phone and ADA compliance are required in all commercial and multi-family elevators. ADRE can order elevators taken out of service for safety violations until corrections are made.
