Suffolk County elevators are regulated under NY Industrial Code 12 NYCRR Part 20 and ASME A17.1 Safety Code for Elevators. Annual inspections by NY State Department of Labor or authorized insurance inspectors required. Certificate of operation must be posted in elevator car.
NY Labor Law sec. 202 and 12 NYCRR Part 20 require all elevators, escalators, and related lift devices to be inspected annually by NY DOL or authorized inspectors (typically insurance company inspectors certified by ASME QEI-1). Certificate of Operation must be current and posted visibly. Inspection covers safety devices, ropes/cables, door operators, emergency communication, and fire service operation. New installations and major modifications require filing with NY DOL and final inspection. Towns may require building department sign-off for installations as part of building permit process. Elevator modernization (door sensors, pit switches, fire recall) requirements updated periodically. Commercial and multi-family residential elevators must have working emergency phone with 24-hour monitored response.
Operating without current Certificate: 500-2,500 dollars per day, potential shutdown order. Failure to correct violations within specified time: up to 5,000 dollars per violation. Serious accident: criminal referral.
