Chesapeake property owners must maintain premises free of rodent and insect infestations under the Virginia Maintenance Code (VMC). Violations can trigger abatement orders from Code Compliance, and severe infestations may result in property condemnation.
Chesapeake enforces the Virginia Maintenance Code (13VAC5-63 Part III), which mandates that owners keep structures and exterior premises free of insects, rodents, and vermin. Code Compliance inspectors respond to complaints about rat harborage, bed bugs in rentals, and mosquito breeding sites. Standing water lasting 5 or more days may be cited as a mosquito nuisance. Commercial pesticide applicators must be licensed by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS) under VA Code 3.2-3900. Termite inspections are required for new residential construction per USBC.
Notice of violation with 15-30 day compliance window. Fines 100-500 dollars per day. City may abate and lien the property.
