South Jordan requires smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every floor, per the Utah-adopted International Residential Code.
Under the International Residential Code as adopted by Utah and enforced by South Jordan, smoke alarms are required in every bedroom, in hallways immediately outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the dwelling including basements and habitable attics. For new construction and substantial remodels, alarms must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so that activation of one triggers all. Existing homes undergoing alteration, repair, or addition that requires a permit must bring smoke alarms up to current code in the affected area. Battery-only alarms are acceptable in existing homes where no electrical work is being done, and Utah code generally requires 10-year sealed lithium batteries in new battery-only installations. Alarms must be replaced every 10 years from the manufacture date. Combination smoke/CO alarms are permitted.
