Smoke alarms required in every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on each floor per IRC R314; CO alarms required where fuel-burning appliances exist.
South Jordan enforces the International Residential Code (IRC) Section R314 as adopted by Utah for smoke alarms and R315 for carbon monoxide alarms. Required locations include each bedroom, immediately outside each sleeping area, and on every story including basements. New construction and additions over $1,000 require interconnected, hardwired alarms with battery backup. Existing dwellings may use battery-only units when replacement is triggered. CO alarms are required outside sleeping areas in any dwelling with fuel-burning appliances or an attached garage. Landlords must maintain alarms; tenants are responsible for battery replacement.
