Consumer (Class C, 1.4G) fireworks are legal in unincorporated Salt Lake County only during state-authorized windows: July 2-5, July 22-25 (Pioneer Day), and December 31 through January 1. Discharge is prohibited outside those dates and is banned year round in designated wildfire-restricted areas along the Wasatch and Oquirrh foothills and in canyons under Unified Fire Authority fire marshal order.
Utah Code 53-7-220 through 53-7-225 establishes the statewide legal discharge windows for state-approved consumer fireworks. Salt Lake County and UFA use the authority under Utah Code 11-3-8 to designate restricted zones each summer where aerial and ground fireworks are banned to protect the Wildland-Urban Interface. Restricted areas typically include all land above roughly 5,000 feet elevation on the east bench, Parleys, Millcreek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood canyons, the Oquirrh foothills, and open space preserves. UFA publishes an updated fireworks restriction map each June. Outside legal windows, possession for discharge is a class B misdemeanor and may carry full wildfire suppression cost recovery, which can reach hundreds of thousands of dollars for foothill fires. Aerial fireworks must be discharged at least 30 feet from structures, ground fireworks at least 10 feet. Discharge hours are 11 AM to 11 PM, extended to midnight on July 4, July 24, and New Year Eve. Sky lanterns and homemade fireworks are banned statewide. Class B display fireworks require a licensed pyrotechnician and a UFA permit. Using fireworks that start a wildfire is a class A misdemeanor and subjects the user to strict civil liability for damages.
