Salt Lake County regulates on-street parking in unincorporated areas under Title 14 of the County Code and Utah Code Title 41 Chapter 6a. Vehicles cannot remain parked on the same public street for more than 48 consecutive hours. Parking is prohibited within 30 feet of stop signs, 15 feet of fire hydrants, in front of driveways, and on sidewalks or park strips in all cases.
Salt Lake County Public Works and the Unified Police Department jointly enforce on-street parking rules in unincorporated areas. The baseline 48-hour rule applies countywide: any vehicle parked on a public right-of-way for more than 48 hours without being moved can be ticketed and towed at the owner expense. Standard state law prohibitions under Utah Code 41-6a-1402 apply, including no parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant, within 30 feet of a stop sign or traffic signal on the approach side, within 20 feet of a marked crosswalk, in front of a public or private driveway, on a sidewalk, or in a bike lane. In the foothill canyon communities and winter storm areas, temporary no-parking restrictions are posted for snow removal operations; vehicles obstructing plows are towed. Commercial vehicles over 9,000 pounds gross weight cannot park on residential streets for more than two hours except for active loading. RVs, trailers, and boats are subject to specific limitations discussed in the oversized vehicle section. Parking citations start at approximately 50 to 75 dollars for most violations with higher fines for fire hydrant, handicapped, and snow-emergency violations. Abandoned vehicles, defined as inoperable or unregistered for more than 72 hours, are tagged and subject to towing.
