Medical cannabis is legal in Utah under the Utah Medical Cannabis Act (HB 3001, 2018). Patients with a qualifying condition and a medical cannabis card can purchase from licensed pharmacies; South Jordan does not host a licensed cannabis pharmacy within its limits.
The Utah Medical Cannabis Act - enacted by the Legislature in HB 3001 (2018) as a compromise replacement for voter-approved Proposition 2 - allows qualified patients with a medical cannabis card to obtain cannabis products from state-licensed Medical Cannabis Pharmacies. Qualifying conditions include HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's, ALS, cancer, Crohn's disease, epilepsy, MS, PTSD, autism, cachexia, chronic pain not responsive to opioids, hospice, and several others (Utah Code 26B-4-201). Patients must be evaluated by a Qualified Medical Provider (QMP) and obtain the card from the Utah Department of Health and Human Services; cards cost $15 plus provider fees. Authorized forms: capsule, concentrated oil, cube, gelatinous cube, liquid suspension, tablet, topical, transdermal, and wax/resin. Smoking raw cannabis flower is prohibited; vaporizing flower is allowed for cardholders. Possession limits are 113 grams of unprocessed flower or 20 grams of total composite THC over a 30-day period. Utah had 14-15 licensed pharmacies statewide at program launch, expanded modestly; the closest pharmacies to South Jordan include Bloc Dispensary (West Jordan/Salt Lake area) and Perfect Earth Modern Apothecary. South Jordan does not host a licensed pharmacy, and local zoning and the state's geographic distribution formulas limit new licenses. Employment protections and housing protections for medical cannabis patients are limited under Utah Code 26B-4-211.
