El Monte FAQ

What items qualify as 'bulky' for the free pickup?

Per the City's program: appliances, rolled and tied carpets, chairs, desks, electronics, mattresses, sofas, tables, tires, and bundled tree branches. Anything that won't fit in your trash cart and isn't on the prohibited list.

How do I dispose of construction debris from my remodel?

The bulky program does NOT take C&D debris. El Monte Chapter 8.20 requires at least 65% of C&D material to be diverted from landfill; you must file a CD-1 Diversion Plan and use a permitted hauler or self-haul to a certified facility.

What about old paint, batteries, or motor oil?

Household hazardous waste cannot go out for bulky pickup. Use Los Angeles County's free HHW/E-Waste roundup events or a permanent HHW collection center.

South Gate FAQ

How many bulky items can I dispose of for free?

Up to 10 per month per residential service address. Items 11+ incur a UWS fee.

Can I put a couch at the curb without calling?

No. Unscheduled bulky items on public property are illegal dumping under SGMC §7.78 and California Penal Code §374.3. Schedule with UWS first.

What about paint or chemicals?

Not accepted curbside. Take to LA County's S.A.F.E. center or the LACSD South Gate Transfer Station household hazardous waste collection.
