Universal Waste Systems provides up to 10 FREE bulky item pickups per month for South Gate residential customers and multifamily tenants. Items must be scheduled in advance; e-waste is unlimited.
Under South Gate's exclusive franchise agreement, Universal Waste Systems (UWS) collects up to ten (10) bulky items per month at no extra charge for each residential service address (including multifamily tenants). After the 10th item in a month, UWS charges a per-item fee. Accepted bulky items include furniture (sofas, mattresses, chairs, rugs), large appliances (refrigerators, washers, dryers, ranges, water heaters, dishwashers), plumbing fixtures, and electronic waste. Electronic waste (e-waste) such as TVs, monitors, computers, and small electronics may be set out in unlimited quantity each month. Refrigerators and freezers are accepted but must have refrigerant removed per state hazardous-waste rules. Hazardous waste (paint, batteries, motor oil, chemicals, sharps) is NOT collected curbside and must be taken to an LA County household hazardous waste roundup or the LA County Sanitation Districts' South Gate Transfer Station / S.A.F.E. center. SGMC §7.78 defines a 'bulky item' as any discarded furniture, home or industrial appliance, abandoned vehicle or vehicle part, or any object exceeding the maximum size/weight allowed in a household or commercial refuse container — meaning these items cannot legally be placed in your regular carts. To schedule, call UWS at 562-334-3660, email SGCustomerService@uwscompany.com, or use the request form on the UWS website. Items must be set out at the curb on the scheduled pickup day and not before, to avoid an illegal-dumping citation under SGMC Ch. 7.78.
Setting bulky items in the right-of-way without scheduling pickup constitutes illegal dumping under SGMC §7.78 (see California Penal Code §374.3: fines from $250 first offense up to $3,000 third offense, plus mandatory community service). Exceeding 10 items/month triggers UWS per-item fees.
