Ventura FAQ

Can I plant a fruit tree in my parkway strip?

Only if it is on the City Tree Master Plan approved species list for your street. Most fruit trees are excluded from parkway plantings because of slip, sting, and litter hazards. Call Urban Forestry at 805-667-6519 before planting; the permit and species must be approved in advance.

Who is responsible for watering a new parkway tree?

The adjacent property owner is responsible for routine watering during the establishment period (typically the first 1-3 years). The Parks Division provides species selection, planting standards, and pruning on the 6-year cycle, but does not water private-adjacent parkway plantings.

What if a parkway tree is lifting my sidewalk?

Report the damage through Ventura Connects or call Urban Forestry at 805-667-6519. The City evaluates root-pruning, sidewalk replacement with root barriers, or, as a last resort, tree removal and replacement. Do not perform root pruning yourself, as it can destabilize the tree and is treated as unpermitted work on a public tree.
