Yuba City FAQ

Can I plant my own tree in the parkway strip in front of my house?

Only with Parks Division approval. The parkway strip is part of the public right of way, and the city's Parks Division controls planting there. Submit a request to the Parks Division at (530) 822-4648 specifying the species; the species must be on the Recommended Street Trees list or approved as an alternative.

What if there's a power line over the parkway?

Use a smaller species from the 'Recommended Street Trees Under Power Lines' list - Crape Myrtle, Eastern Redbud, Trident Maple, Flowering Dogwood, Kousa Dogwood, Chinese Flame Tree, Mayten, Tupelo, or Chinese Fringe Tree. These mature small enough to avoid utility conflicts without heavy pruning.

Who is responsible for watering and maintaining a parkway tree?

Once accepted by the city, parkway trees are maintained by Parks Maintenance Division. During the subdivision warranty period (typically the first year after improvement acceptance), the developer is responsible. Adjacent property owners are encouraged to supplement watering during summer establishment, but pruning and major maintenance is a city function. Do not top or aggressively prune a parkway tree without Parks Division approval.
