On July 8, 2026, the Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to have staff prepare an urgency interim zoning ordinance that would pause the processing and approval of new data centers, and created a two-member data center ad hoc committee of Supervisors John Haschak and Ted Williams to study environmental, public health, and fiscal impacts. No data center has been publicly proposed in the county. Under California Government Code section 65858, adopting an urgency measure takes a four-fifths Board vote; it would take effect immediately for 45 days and could be extended after public hearings for up to two years.
There is no moratorium to violate today. If the Board adopts the urgency ordinance, the county would suspend accepting and processing new data center applications for its duration, and any project filed during the pause would be held pending.
