Recreational drone flight is effectively banned throughout Staten Island except in five FAA/NYC-approved takeoff and landing sites. NYC Admin Code 10-126 prohibits taking off or landing an aircraft (including drones) anywhere except a designated place. Additionally all of NYC lies within Class B airspace around JFK, LGA, and EWR, requiring FAA LAANC authorization.
The five authorized NYC model aircraft fields are operated by NYC Parks; none are on Staten Island as of 2025, so recreational flights on the island require special NYPD permission. Violations are misdemeanors with fines up to 250 dollars and possible arrest. All drones over 0.55 lbs must be FAA-registered.
