Official NYC-issued or approved bins must be placed at the curb between 6 PM the night before pickup and 4 AM the morning of pickup, and removed from the public way by end of collection day. Bins must not block pedestrian passage, fire hydrants, bus stops, or curb cuts.
Under Local Law 2023/152 and DSNY rules effective November 2024, residential buildings must use lidded, wheeled containers. Storage between pickups must be on private property (rear or side yard) unless the building qualifies for front-yard storage. Violations start at 50 dollars for a first offense.
