Nassau County participates in NY Climate Smart Communities (CSC), pledging emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and sustainability planning across county operations and programs serving 1.4 million residents.
The CSC pledge commits Nassau to a 10-element framework: government operations, energy efficiency, renewables, climate-smart land use, vehicle and waste reduction, food systems, climate adaptation, and education. Nassau pursues bronze certification through inventories and action items. The county GHG inventory tracks emissions from buildings, fleet, and waste. Adaptation focuses on Long Island Sound coastal flooding, heat events, and stormwater. Residents benefit through rebates, electrification programs, and tree-planting grants administered with NYSERDA support countywide.
CSC is a voluntary pledge with no resident penalties; non-compliance affects county grant eligibility and certification status under NYSDEC.
