Mangrove trimming and removal in Venice is governed by the Florida Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act (Fla. Stat. 403.9321-9333). Mangroves taller than 10 feet generally require a professional mangrove trimmer or DEP permit before trimming.
The state Mangrove Act preempts most local mangrove regulation. Property owners may trim riparian mangroves up to 6 feet tall to a minimum height of 6 feet using the General Trimming Permit (no DEP application required). Mangroves 6-10 feet tall on residential lots up to 1 acre and 100 feet shoreline may be trimmed by the owner without a permit if minimum height is preserved. Taller mangroves or large-scale trimming require a Professional Mangrove Trimmer or DEP permit. Alteration or removal without authorization is a serious violation.
Florida DEP enforces with civil penalties up to $250 per linear foot of shoreline plus restoration. Each cut mangrove can be charged separately. The City may impose additional fines under Sec. 1-14.
