LFUCG follows sustainable procurement guidelines under Empower Lexington, prioritizing energy-efficient equipment, recycled-content products, and lower-emission fleet vehicles in government purchasing decisions.
LFUCG's sustainable procurement practices apply to government purchasing only and do not regulate private business or resident buying. The Division of Central Purchasing follows policies favoring Energy Star equipment, recycled-content paper and supplies, EPA WaterSense fixtures, and lower-emission or electric fleet vehicles where feasible. Empower Lexington (2024) strengthened these preferences and added carbon considerations to capital project evaluation. Vendors bidding on LFUCG contracts may be asked about sustainability credentials. The policy is internal and is updated periodically by the Office of Environmental Policy in coordination with Central Purchasing and the Council Environmental Quality Committee.
Sustainable procurement applies to government purchasing only. There are no resident or business obligations. Internal noncompliance is addressed through purchasing review, not fines.
