Sight triangle rules are set by each Rockland town zoning code to protect traffic visibility. Clarkstown Zoning Code Section 290-17 requires a clear sight triangle of 30 feet along each street line at corner lots with no obstruction between 30 inches and 10 feet in height. Ramapo Code Ch. 376-53 requires a 25-foot triangle on local streets, 50 feet at arterials. Orangetown Zoning Sec. 43-3.7 uses a 30-foot sight triangle. Haverstraw and Stony Point similar. Driveway visibility triangles typically run 10 feet back from the road and 25 feet along the travel lane. Rockland County Department of Highways enforces visibility on county roads (identified with CR prefixes). Shrubs, ornamental grasses, decorative walls, and fences all count as obstructions. NYS DOT has state-level visibility easements on state routes (9W, 17, 59, 202, 303).
Code enforcement can order immediate removal of sight-obstructing landscaping or fences. Failure to comply: $250-$1,000 fines plus daily continuing penalties. Vehicle accidents caused by obstructed sight lines can create civil liability for the property owner.
