Pleasanton fences must comply with Chapter 18.84 height limits, with corner-lot sight-line restrictions of 30 inches (solid) and 42 inches (open) on the street side. Over-height fences (6-8 feet) require Administrative Design Review. Pool barrier fencing is separately governed by the adopted building code.
Beyond simple height, Pleasanton fences must meet several requirements under PMC Chapter 18.84. Placement matters: in a required front yard, solid fencing is capped at 30 inches and open fencing at 42 inches (section 18.84.080), while side and rear yards allow up to six feet (section 18.84.090). On corner lots, the street side is held to 30 inches solid and 42 inches open to preserve traffic visibility and clear sight lines at intersections. Fences over six feet but not over eight feet require zoning administrator approval through Administrative Design Review, which evaluates design and materials. Height is generally measured from the higher finished grade adjoining the fence, so sloped lots and walls affect the calculation. For decorative front-yard fencing, a solid base of brick or split-face block up to 18 inches is allowed within the 42-inch open-fence limit, and decorative columns, caps, or pilasters up to 48 inches (generally spaced about six feet apart) are permitted. Swimming pool enclosure fencing must additionally satisfy the barrier requirements of the California Building Code adopted under Title 20. Because exact yard and bulk standards differ by zoning district under Table 18.84.010, homeowners should verify district-specific rules with the Planning Division before installing a fence.
Non-compliant fences, including those blocking corner sight lines or exceeding height limits, may be cited by code enforcement with orders to lower, relocate, or remove the fence.
