This means a standard 20-pound propane tank grill cannot be used or stored on a typical wood apartment balcony. Charcoal grilling on combustible balconies is effectively prohibited. When barbecuing anywhere, keep the grill clear of structures, fences, and dry vegetation, never leave it unattended, and follow any posted restrictions from your property management. Gas and propane grilling is not affected by the BAAQMD Spare the Air wood-smoke ban.
Operating a non-compliant grill on a combustible multifamily balcony violates the adopted California Fire Code and is enforced by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, with penalties applied under the Pleasanton Municipal Code and California Government Code Section 36900. Property managers commonly impose their own additional grilling rules to comply with this code.
