Pleasanton has no ordinance specifically regulating backyard smokers, but wood- and charcoal-fired smokers fall under the adopted California Fire Code (PMC Ch. 20.24) and, for wood-burning units, BAAQMD air-quality rules. Smokers using solid fuel are restricted on combustible multifamily balconies, and wood smokers may be limited on Spare the Air Alert days.
Outdoor smokers are treated like other open-flame and solid-fuel cooking devices in Pleasanton. At single-family homes there is no city ordinance banning charcoal, pellet, or wood-fired smokers; the main constraints are general fire safety and the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department's daily fire-danger guidance, which restricts open-flame devices in open space and wildland-urban interface areas during High and Very High fire danger. For apartments and condominiums, the city's adopted California Fire Code Section 308.1.4 (PMC Chapter 20.24) applies: charcoal and other open-flame cooking devices — which include charcoal and wood-fired smokers — cannot be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction, except in one- and two-family dwellings or sprinkler-protected buildings. Because dedicated wood/charcoal smokers run for many hours and produce significant smoke, neighbors' nuisance complaints can also trigger review. Wood-burning smokers (and any device burning solid wood) are subject to BAAQMD wood-smoke rules; while purpose-built cooking devices are the primary concern of Regulation 6, Rule 3 on Spare the Air days, residents should avoid prolonged wood smoking on alert days and never burn trash, painted/treated wood, or other prohibited materials. Gas- and pellet-fueled smokers that meet the balcony cylinder limits and produce minimal smoke are the most broadly compliant options. Keep any smoker clear of fences, eaves, and dry vegetation and never leave it unattended.
Operating a charcoal or wood smoker on a combustible multifamily balcony violates the adopted California Fire Code and is enforced by the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department under Pleasanton Municipal Code penalties and California Government Code Section 36900. Burning prohibited materials or excessive smoke on a Spare the Air day can draw BAAQMD enforcement, and persistent smoke can be pursued as a nuisance.
