Pleasanton bans all consumer fireworks. The Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department cites Pleasanton Municipal Code Section 13.08.050, which prohibits the possession, sale, and use of all fireworks, including sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and aerial shells. The city Fire Code (PMC 20.24.250) separately prohibits possession, manufacture, storage, sale, handling, and use of fireworks.
There is no 'safe and sane' exception in Pleasanton. According to the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department (LPFD), Pleasanton Municipal Code Section 13.08.050 prohibits the possession, sale, and use of all fireworks, listing sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets, and aerial shells as covered. The city's adopted Fire Code reinforces this: PMC Section 20.24.250 amends California Fire Code Section 5601.1.3 to state that 'the possession, manufacturing, storage, sale, handling, and use of fireworks are prohibited.' This city-level total ban is stricter than the California Health and Safety Code, which permits each city to decide whether 'safe and sane' fireworks are allowed; Pleasanton has chosen a complete ban. Dangerous fireworks (those that explode or fly, defined under California Health and Safety Code Sections 12505 and 12561) are illegal statewide regardless of local rules. LPFD notes fireworks are a leading cause of California wildfires and that even sparklers burn around 1,200 degrees F. Residents may surrender unwanted fireworks to the Fire Prevention Bureau at 3560 Nevada Street; call 925-454-2361 to schedule a drop-off. Use 911 to report fireworks in use.
Per LPFD, violations can result in fines of up to $1,000 per offense and confiscation of the fireworks. Both Fire and Police Departments may seize fireworks and issue citations. Possessing dangerous fireworks without a permit is a misdemeanor under California Health and Safety Code Section 12677.
