Kaukauna, WI Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

Kaukauna's published Residential Fence Code Requirements (last revised April 2023) implement the city's Municipal Zoning Code and govern all residential fence construction. Front yard fences may not exceed 3 1/2 feet in height and must be at least 50% visible (i.e., open in design). Side yard and rear yard fences are capped at 6 feet. All fences must be built with approved fence wire or treated fence wood; barbed wire, razor wire, old doors, chicken wire, sheet metal, and plywood are expressly prohibited materials. Fences may extend to property lines unless an easement or setback applies, and the supporting members (rails and posts) must face the interior of the lot containing the fence. Fences may not be placed on a neighbor's property or in the area between the curb and the street lot line. Property owners are responsible for verifying their property lines and any recorded easements before installation. On corner lots and at street-alley intersections, a vision clearance triangle applies: no fence, wall, hedge, planting, or structure may be erected, placed, or maintained in a manner that obstructs vision greater than 2 1/2 feet above the centerlines of the abutting streets, measured 50 feet back from a street intersection and 10 feet back from a street-alley intersection. A fence permit must be obtained before construction; the application (submitted via Cloud Permit) requires the proposed fence location, materials, height, length, and project cost. Sec. 62.23, and shared boundary fences are also subject to Wisconsin's partition-fence statutes in Wis. Stat. Chapter 90.
