Syracuse's ReZone zoning ordinance sets fence height limits in residential districts. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet; side and rear fences may be up to 6 feet.
Under Syracuse's zoning ordinance (ReZone, effective July 2023, amended July 2024), residential fences in front yards are limited to 4 feet. Side and rear yard fences may be up to 6 feet in height. Corner lot fences on the street-facing side must comply with sight distance requirements. Fences above maximum heights require a variance from the Board of Zoning Appeals. The zoning ordinance also addresses retaining walls and their relationship to fence heights. The Department of Zoning Administration reviews fence compliance.
Zoning violation notices. Orders to modify non-compliant fences. Fines for continued violations.
