Alameda County prohibits barbed wire, razor wire, and electrified fences in residential zones. Chain link may be restricted in front yards in some areas, and hazardous materials are banned countywide.
Alameda County Zoning Ordinance restricts certain fence materials in residential and mixed-use zones. Barbed wire, razor wire, concertina wire, and electrified fences are generally prohibited in residential zones; limited allowances exist in agricultural zones above a minimum height (often 6 feet) for livestock containment, and in industrial zones with setbacks. Broken glass, spikes, or other hazardous materials on top of fences are prohibited countywide for public safety. Chain link fencing may be restricted in front yard locations in certain zoning districts or with scenic-corridor overlays. Fences must be maintained in good repair; dilapidated, leaning, or fallen fences may be subject to nuisance abatement under the county property maintenance code. In Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones in the East Bay foothills, CAL FIRE and county fire code may discourage or restrict use of combustible fence materials within 5 feet of structures.
