LAMC does not ban specific residential fence materials but barbed wire is prohibited in residential zones except for industrial/commercial boundaries. Chain-link, wood, vinyl, wrought iron, and masonry are all permitted. Pool barrier fences have specific material standards. The spite fence doctrine under CA Civil Code 841.4 applies to fences over 10 feet built to annoy a neighbor.
LAMC Division 14.2 defines a fence as a constructed vertical barrier of wood, masonry, wire, metal, or other manufactured material or combination thereof. Section 12.22 C.20(f) includes latticework, ornamental fences, screen walls, hedges, and thick growths of shrubs or trees within the definition. Fence Height Districts under Section 13.10 require open wrought iron construction with specific dimensions: vertical members no greater than 5/8 inches diameter spaced at least 4 inches apart on center, horizontal members no greater than 1 inch diameter spaced at least 18 inches apart, and solid pilasters no more than 24 inches wide spaced at least 8 feet apart. Driveway gates must be wrought iron, opening inward, with electric gates requiring approved safety devices.
Fences not meeting material requirements in Fence Height Districts must be modified or removed. LADBS enforces building code compliance for masonry and concrete fences requiring permits.
