Compton regulates fence materials under Chapter 30 (Section 30-44). Masonry fences under 5 ft and wood or similar fences under 6 ft are exempt from building permits. Barbed wire and razor wire are restricted in residential zones.
Under CMC Section 30-44.4, Compton regulates fencing materials based on land use. White picket fences may enclose the front yard setback of any residential use, except where solid fencing is needed to separate commercial/manufacturing from residential zones. Wrought iron fencing is allowed for all front yard setbacks in all zones, and may include decorative masonry pilasters with a masonry base no more than 50% of the fence height. Chain link is limited to interior commercial/manufacturing lines, pool enclosures not visible from public right-of-way, and vacant lots. Barbed wire (maximum 3 strands) is limited to M-L and M-H zones not abutting residential zones. Prohibited materials: corrugated metal, sheet metal, tin, chicken wire, fiberglass, plywood or panel board, used/salvaged materials (tires, railroad ties, doors), electrified fencing, razor wire, concertina wire, cut glass, fabric, and plastic sheeting.
Use of prohibited fencing materials is a zoning violation subject to code enforcement action, fines, and mandatory removal.
