El Monte allows decorative wrought iron fencing up to 5 ft in front yards if at least 50% open with decorative block pilasters (Sec. 17.60.120). Solid fences in front yards limited to 4 ft. Commercial/industrial abutting residential requires 6 ft masonry wall.
EMMC Section 17.60.120 specifies fence materials. In front yards, fences extending above 42 inches must use wrought iron, chain link, or other see-through materials approved by the Director of Planning. No plants, vines, or materials may limit visibility through the see-through portion. In R-2 and R-3 zones, the same front yard material requirements apply. Barbed, pointed, spiked, razor, piercing, or similar wire is prohibited in residential zones but may be used in commercial and industrial zones, except within 25 feet of any public right-of-way.
Non-approved materials face code enforcement. Planning Director approval is required for non-standard materials.
