Barbed wire and sharp/protruding objects prohibited on fences in all residential zones. Razor wire prohibited in all zones. Front yard fences over 2 ft must be open-work design. Ornamental metal fences may reach 5 ft in front yard.
Under IMC Chapter 12, Article 24, front yard fences above 2 feet must be open-work (allowing visibility). The 5-foot maximum applies only if the open-work portion is ornamental metal. No fence or wall in any residential zone shall incorporate barbed wire or other sharp or protruding objects. No fence in any nonresidential zone shall incorporate barbed wire without a variance when necessary for security with no reasonable alternative. Razor wire is prohibited in all zones without exception. Hedges cannot be supported by structural devices (fences, posts, poles). All fences must be developed in conformance with Chapters 11 and 12 of the IMC.
Fences with prohibited materials (barbed wire, razor wire) are violations subject to code enforcement action and removal orders.
