Inglewood, CA Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

1 governs every wall or fence in a residential zone or on residentially developed property. In the front yard setback, and in the street side yard setback of a reversed corner lot, a fence or wall cannot exceed 4 feet in height, and any portion above 2 feet must be open-work rather than solid. The code allows one exception to reach 5 feet: if the open-work portion above 2 feet is ornamental metal only, and any supporting masonry pillars cannot exceed 16 inches wide or sit closer than 8 feet apart, except where a pedestrian gate fits between closer pillars.

Behind the front building line, in rear yards and side yards, fences and walls can rise to 8 feet, measured from the side with the higher natural grade. Where a wall also retains soil above natural grade, that retaining function counts toward the height limit, though an open-work guard rail up to 42 inches can be added on top without counting against the cap. The height rules do not stop a school from fencing an elementary, junior high, or high school site, as long as the fence does not project past the building's front line.
